Visit our community What is an anomaly scan? An anomaly scan, also known as a mid-pregnancy scan, takes a close look at your baby and your womb uterus. The person carrying out the scan sonographer will check that your baby is developing normally, and look at where the placenta is lying. This image shows a baby’s face and hands at 20 weeks, and gives you an idea of what you will be able to see at this scan. Seeing your baby on a screen can be really exciting. You can also take your partner , friend or family member along to share the experience with you. The main purpose of the scan is to check that your baby is developing normally, rather than whether you’re expecting a boy or girl. However, you may want to know your baby’s gender or ask for a photo of your scan. Sometimes, the sonographer can’t get a good enough view to tell the gender, perhaps because of your baby’s position, or if you have a lot of tummy fat NHS a. And some hospitals have a policy of not telling parents-to-be, to prevent mistakes in identifying gender from happening.
The scan is usually done transabdominally, but occasionally it may be necessary to do the scan transvaginally: The purpose of the week scan: To date the pregnancy accurately. This is particularly relevant for women who cannot recall the date of their last period, have an irregular menstrual cycle, or who have conceived whilst breastfeeding or soon after stopping the pill. We measure the size of the fetus and from this we calculate the expected date of delivery.
It should be bornt in mind that prenatal ultrasound cannot diagnose all malformations and problems of an unborn baby (reported figures range from 40 to 98 percent), so one should never interpret a normal scan report as a guarantee that the baby will be completely normal.
Screening for pre-eclampsia high blood pressure in pregnancy What else is the scan called? What part of the baby will be seen? You will notice a dramatic difference in the anatomic detail visible in your baby on this scan when compared to the 12 week scan. The ultrasound will endeavour to evaluate the fetal brain, face, spine, heart, lungs, stomach, kidneys, bladder, cord insertion at the belly button, arms and legs, placenta cervix and amniotic fluid.
Can all abnormalities be seen? An amazing amount of detail can often be seen. However it is important to realize that not all parts of the baby show up well with ultrasound. No ultrasound examination can ever guarantee a normal fetus. The best centres in the world consistently report on the limitations of ultrasound and its inability to detect all fetal abnormalities. Up to half the fetal heart defects will not be seen. Some of these are only minor, but some may not be apparent until the fetus is bigger, later in the pregnancy.

Doppler Ultrasound The doppler shift principle has been used for a long time in fetal heart rate detectors. Further developments in doppler ultrasound technology in recent years have enabled a great expansion in its application in Obstetrics, particularly in the area of assessing and monitoring the well-being of the fetus, its progression in the face of intrauterine growth restriction, and the diagnosis of cardiac malformations.
Doppler ultrasound is presently most widely employed in the detection of fetal cardiac pulsations and pulsations in the various fetal blood vessels. The “Doptone” fetal pulse detector is a commonly used handheld device to detect fetal heartbeat using the same doppler principle. Blood flow characteristics in the fetal blood vessels can be assessed with Doppler ‘flow velocity waveforms’. Diminished flow, particularly in the diastolic phase of a pulse cycle is associated with compromise in the fetus.
Various ratios of the systolic to diastolic flow are used as a measure of this compromise. The blood vessels commonly interrogated include the umbilical artery , the aorta , the middle cerebral arteries , the uterine arcuate arteries , and the inferior vena cava. The use of color flow mapping can clearly depict the flow of blood in fetal blood vessels in a realtime scan, the direction of the flow being represented by different colors.
Color doppler is particularly indispensible in the diagnosis of fetal cardiac and blood vessel defects , and in the assessment of the hemodynamic responses to fetal hypoxia and anemia.

To ultrasound or not to ultrasound? That is the question. For most pregnant mamas, ultrasounds are just a given. As a natural mama, we want to avoid as many interventions as possible during pregnancy and birth. Some studies also found that when women had an ultrasound for dating they were less likely to be induced for post-term pregnancy. However, if you have a practitioner like a midwife who is ok with continuing to closely monitor a post-term pregnancy, this may not be an issue for you. Other studies have found that dating from the last menstrual period was just as accurate as dating from an ultrasound.
Better yet, use our advanced due date calculator to determine a more accurate result than standard due date calculators. Keep in mind as ultrasounds get later and later during the pregnancy, they become much less reliable in predicting accurate due dates. Ideally, a dating ultrasound would need to be done in the first trimester, usually around weeks gestation.

The extra chromosome causes physical differences, developmental delays and a tendency toward certain health problems. This condition is incurable, but testing during pregnancy gives parents the chance to prepare for the unique needs of a child with birth defects, as well as identifying any specific abnormalities that may require medical care after birth.
Therefore you should carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of screening test such as FTS compared with a diagnostic test such as CVS or amniocentesis. The most accurate way of estimating the chances of your baby having a chromosomal problem is the first trimester screening test of the nuchal translucency measurement combined with a blood test. Nuchal Translucency screening is a non invasive test and poses no risk to you or your baby.

First trimester ultrasound is performed in the first months of a pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed mainly using transabdominal ultrasound. For many women, especially after 8 weeks gestation, sufficient information about the baby may be obtained with transabdominal ultrasound only. However, in the early pregnancy, the developing embryo is very small at 6 weeks gestation, the baby is only mm long and a transvaginal ultrasound may be required to get a better image of the baby.
Transvaginal ultrasound is safe and commonly performed during all stages of pregnancy, including the first trimester. It will not harm you or your baby. Transabdominal ultrasound involves scanning through your lower abdomen. A small amount of ultrasound gel is put on the skin of the lower abdomen, with the ultrasound probe then scanning through this gel. The gel helps improve contact between the probe and your skin.
