Tips for a Subwoofer Installation Without an Amp by Jule Pamplin Installing a subwoofer in your vehicle provides power and balance to any car stereo system. The speakers in the door panels and rear deck can only provide so much in the way of bass, and a subwoofer is designed specifically for bringing out the lowest tones of music. Use a powered subwoofer to eliminate the need to include an aftermarket amplifier to power the larger speaker of a subwoofer.
Battery Safety Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative terminal. The negative is the ground for the vehicle’s electrical system.
You can’t do it without amplifier. Subwoofers require high power for functioning. You can’t just plug them into your car stereo\player. For playing subwoofer you would require minimum a 2-channel amp. 4-channel would sound best.
That’s because they don’t understand each other. Yep, not only do most audiophiles not understand subwoofers very well, subwoofers generally aren’t built with the needs of audiophiles in mind. It’s a sad situation. Most audiophiles don’t use subs, so they’re missing out on great bass. Obviously, if you’re using stand-mounted speakers without a sub, you’re not getting deep bass. But even if you’re using a big pair of tower speakers, you’re probably not getting good bass.
The Difference Between a Passive and Powered Subwoofer
LOADS Amplifiers are designed to power a specific “load”, meaning a speaker or set of speakers having a specific “AC impedance” measured in ohms. Impedance resists the flow of electric current so the higher the speaker impedance the less current the amplifier has to supply. Conversely, the lower the impedance the more current must be supplied. In other words, a low impedance speaker is a big workload for your amp and a high impedance speaker is a small load.
To push more air, several speakers always of equal impedance can be wired together in a cabinet.
May 29, · No output converter needed no after market radio needed just speaker and amp and amp kit.
Relax, it’s not difficult at all. Let’s start with the inputs. A balanced connection typically uses XLR connectors, which are relatively large round connectors with three pins male or three holes female in a triangular formation as shown above. This same type of cable used with professional microphones. A balanced connection reduces the risk of induced noise from power cords, radio-frequency interference RFI , and electromagnetic interference EMI.
By the way, if you are going to the expense of a balanced system, make sure it is balanced throughout the amp and not just at the inputs. In a nutshell, here is how a balanced connection works. As I mentioned above, the two signal conductors carry the same signal, but one is out of phase with the other. Any induced noise that is picked up along the cable will be at the same phase in both conductors.
At the amp’s input, a differential amplifier recognizes and rejects any signal that is in phase in both conductors, leaving only the intended audio signal.
How to Connect a Subwoofer to a Receiver or Amplifier
Are you sure you want to delete this answer? Yes Sorry, something has gone wrong. A powered subwoofer like a bazooka tube would be the easiest solution. All it is is a tube with a speaker and built in amp. You hook up a power wire, a ground wire, a remote wire, and a speaker level input and you’re done.
Oct 02, · The SUB OUT is to connect to a sub amp then to the subwoofer. you can run a single voice coil 4ohm sub off the rear speakers fine, people say it will mess the HU up, but thats a lie as ive done it before for a year. only use one channel ie left or right, or both on 2 subs. will work for dual voice coil 2 ohm sub aswell.
Installing Subwoofers in a Car In this instructable, I will show you the whole process of installing an amplified subwoofer into a car. After you have your subwoofer system set up, you will hear much better sound from your stereo. This process will work with most stock stereos, and all aftermarket stereos. It can be modified to work with all stock stereos, but you may need a few more parts. I will show you how to do this with an aftermarket head unit stereo. When you look at the pictures, realize that I am using an amplifier that is too small for the subwoofer.
It is for demonstration purposes and it does not sound as good as it should.
Non-Powered Subwoofer Connections
The obd port looks like the picture below This port is located somewhere under your drivers dash, lay on the floor and look up. In some cars, it may be behind a panel, but almost all cars will have this port. From this port, information such as fuel, mileage, and other information comes out via data. Most importantly, it has power and ground.
Hook up the amp and subwoofers. Run speaker wire from the amplifier to the subwoofers, making sure to keep positive inputs/outputs are connected properly. Connect fuse and battery.

Lemonslush, I dont mean to call you out on this but if you have more insight on the topic I am interested.

hook up subs without amp? – I am a novice in car audio, but recently I came across 2 free subwoofers. A guy in my neighborhood gave me the subs that used to be in his car. When he first offered me the subs, I told him I dont need them because I dont even have an amp. He told me that their was a way.
It provides the deep bass that most speakers lack and enhances both music and movie soundtracks. Whether you have a powered or passive sub, you’ll need to get it connected to your amplifier for it to work. This is a line level connection, which means it is not amplified. This connection is useful for powered subwoofers only. Connect using speaker wire.
If you have a passive sub or your amplifier lacks a “Sub Out” jack, you can connect the amplifier and subwoofer like you’d connect two speakers. Use the Main Left and Right speaker output terminals on the amplifier and connect to the subwoofer’s speaker inputs. Be sure that the polarities of each individual wire strand are the same. If you used the method in step two, wire the left and right speakers using the left and right speaker outputs on the subwoofer. The signal will be routed from the amplifier through the subwoofer and to the main speakers.
Adjust your stereo settings. If you used a “Sub Out” jack, be sure that the subwoofer is on.
How to Connect a Subwoofer to a Receiver or Amplifier
All it takes is a little know-how and a few tools and supplies. Go to your local car stereo shop and get an amplifier wiring kit. It should have everything you need from cables, wires, fuse and connectors. You need to figure out where you want to put the amplifier.
Apr 21, · NEVER, NEVER, NEVER hook a sub woofer directly to your head unit without an amp. Not only will you be under-powering it by far, but you will cause the radio to become unstable and the internal amp will eventually fail, or overheat and cause a : Resolved.
One thing I learned pretty early in life is that speakers are not meant to be wired together in a haphazard manner. In fact, whenever you plan to connect more than two speakers to a two-channel amplifier — or more than four speakers to a four-channel amp — there are a few things to consider, not the least of which is the amps ability to handle low-impedance loads. Ignoring the basics is like playing Russian roulette with your amplifier: If youre lucky, itll drive the speakers without incident; if youre not, the amp will fry.
The great thing about a multiple-speaker hookup is that once you master only two basic wiring procedures — “series” and “parallel” — the world is yours to conquer. When you know how many speakers youre going to use and the impedance driving capability of your amplifier, youll be able to select a wiring scheme that will deliver the best sonic and electrical results. In some cases, it may not be one procedure or the other but a combination of the two that works best.
Speakers in Series The essence of series wiring is really quite simple: When speakers are connected in this fashion, load impedance increases — the more speakers, the higher the impedance. The most common reason for wanting to raise impedance is to lower acoustical output, as in the case of rear-fill or center-channel speakers. Speaker output declines because the amplifiers power output decreases as the load impedance increases. While you can connect any number of speakers in series, try to keep the total equivalent-load impedance for each channel below 16 ohms, since most amps are not designed to handle higher loads.
Figure 1A demonstrates how to wire a pair of speakers in series.
How to hook up a sub to a car without an amp?
Unfortunately there was almost no example of someone playing a Les Paul or similar through it for If you are looking for an amp to shred through with a sound like late 80s speed metal, this won’t do without a solid state pedal in front of it. However, if you are looking for a more classical dark growl, roar and punch sound like Tony Iommi or a powerful straight ahead hard rock sound like Angus Young or Joe Perry you can get there with your Les Paul plugged straight in, no pedals required.
The fact of the matter is that subwoofers are typically intended to be paired with amplifiers in order to produce that deep, thumping bass that you yearn for, and if you don’t have the bucks to spring for an amp yet, then you’ll have to find some other ways to boost your car’s subwoofer.
If you have speakers already connected to your stereo, fully disconnect them. Active crossover units are larger than passive ones and need to be mounted in a stable location, ideally near your amplifiers. Using the appropriate cables, wire your crossover into the receiver or preamp, with the wires coming out of the receiver going into the “in” terminals on the crossover.
Depending on your receiver and your stereo system, you will probably be making this connection with RCA cables, but some crossovers will are set up to use speaker wire instead as detailed in Method 1 if your receiver doesn’t have RCA outputs. Using the appropriate cables again, usually RCA or speaker wire for a home stereo system , connect the appropriate outputs to the appropriate amplifiers.
If you don’t have a subwoofer, you’ll send your high frequency signal to your tweeter amp and low-frequency signal to your woofer amp. In this case, make sure your crossover is set to two-way mode. There should be a switch that controls this. If you can’t locate it, check your instruction manual. Connect the left output of each frequency range to the left input of the coinciding amplifier and the right output of each frequency range to the right input of the coinciding amplifier.

Monday, October 30, – It’s something that is commonplace with Velodyne’s subs and can be found in Polk’s higher end subs like the PSW of course, we also utilize an amp with this feature. I could be wrong, but I don’t think this would overload the sub’s input.
If the subwoofer features spring clips in order to use speaker wire, then you can use the speaker output of the receiver to hook it all up. This process is the same as connecting a basic stereo sure to mind the channels.

I own 1 roland Kc and a KC and this thing blows them out of the water. This amp is basically an affordable version of the Roland but they stepped it up with cleaner sound, beefier low end and power. Hit the sub bass enhancer and you will see what I mean. Not all keyboard players only play rhodes or B3. In todays age, you need amps that can handle samples, crisp and piercing sawtooth virtual synths patches layered with effects. The Roland and just about any other keyboard amp are made for aging lounge acts and although reliable, have had their time.
This monster seems to be made to handle modern music and that is a big plus for today’s muscian. The mic input I use it to monitor my vocoders. This thing just rocks.
